Innovation Hub Challenge – What is the next big thing in reducing the environmental impact of new homes?

There seems to be a never-ending demand for new homes in the UK.  Changes to the Building Regulations and the Future Homes Standard will deal with thermal efficiency and energy use but the environmental impact of new developments has far wider implications.  In-use energy consumption accounts for around 60% of the carbon emissions however with a change to renewables the emphasis will move to construction methods and types of material. Other factors such as air quality and flooding come into play along with the need to the type of materials and how they are sourced.

Four companies will be given ten minutes to pitch their ideas in a similar way to the BBC’s Dragons Den in front of four judges. At the end of the sessions the judges and audience will be invited to vote for what they consider to be the idea likely to have the least environmental impact.
