Rail Overbuild Research reveals an extra 14% in land available

Out of Thin Air – One Year On, follows WSP’s original research considering the benefits of building over rail lines across London.

Out of Thin Air

Initial research suggested that if only 10% of the available rail land in London could be used to build structures of 12 storeys, there was the potential to create 250,000 homes across the capital, equating to 5 years supply on the current estimate identified by the GLA.

One Year On

Latest research assessment revealed an extra 14% in land available, bringing the total to 2,356 Hectares. If applying the original 10% this would provide 282,681 new homes to London. “Our filters allowed us to understand the most preferred to least preferred locations to create homes on the most appropriate available rail land, while always keeping both the community and environment in mind”.
