Meet Buildoffsite’s Client Group Lead, Doug Waters

Doug is a construction professional with well over 40 years’ practical experience in the construction and civil engineering industry. He has worked for Contractor, Consultant and Client organisations in Education, Retail, Transport, Pharmaceutical and Military.

His career in the aviation sector started in April 1998, on major projects across the south east airports promoting sustainability, offsite assembly, standardisation and the use of modern methods of construction. He was part of the BAA Product and Manufacturing team which won a number of awards for its approach to construction using offsite manufacture.

From February 2009 Doug was employed at Gatwick Airport, where he worked in the Airports Commission team, aiming to gain permission for a second runway at Gatwick. He was responsible for planning and programming the construction delivery and managing risk for the £7bn project, phased over a 20 year delivery programme.

Doug left Gatwick Airport in 2017 and has since been involved with mentoring students at UCL and Surrey University, delivering Environmental training and carrying out construction consultancy.

Doug was Chair of the CIRIA Member’s Council for 4 years, stepping down in September 2017.

He has recently joined Buildoffsite to help bolster the role of Clients within the organisation by setting up and chairing a Client Group. The aim of the Client Group will be to promote 2-way collaboration with the Buildoffsite membership, helping Clients to better understand the benefits of offsite and suppliers to better understand Clients needs and requirements.
