Proposals announced for flatpack homes
Developer Live Smart at Home has announced its intention
to submit proposals for a further UK prefabricated flatpack homes project.
Hendon in Sunderland is the chosen location for the UK's
potential second 100-unit BoKlok development, following a successful pioneer
project in Gateshead in early 2008.
Development director for the company Mike Kirk told Edie.net:
"It is a depressed area where a lot of housing was demolished through
slum clearance and there is unemployment.
"That part of Sunderland has a very low occupation,
so if we can attract first-time buyers, we could start to regenerate it."
If approval is granted, building work on the prefabricated
homes project could start as early as this autumn, with customers able
to purchase the homes from UK Ikea stores for prices starting at £120,000.
Swedish furniture retailer Ikea originally masterminded
the flatpack homes concept in association with Skanska in Scandanavia
and later teamed up with Live Smart at Home to promote similar schemes
in the UK.
