HBF: Prefabricated housing increasingly popular
UK residents are warming to prefabricated housing, which
has experienced a surge in popularity recently, according to a leading
advisory body.
A spokesperson for the Home Builders Federation (HBF) asserted
that modular and prefabricated housing units are a growth industry, with
off-site timber frames the most popular type of prefabricated construction.
John Slaughter put the surge down to reliability, stating:
"[Offsite builds] have early assurance of air tightness and insulation
quality because it is produced according to specific specifications in
a factory environment."
He added that a growing awareness among the house-buying
public of environmental issues surrounding homebuilding was also a main
factor in the rise in the employment of prefabricated techniques.
Author of Prefab Allison Arieff recently told the LA Times
she attributes the continued growth of the prefabricated housing sector
to the lower costs and greater choice they represent for consumers.
