Global shipments of prefabricated housing are rising according to a new study, with experts predicting sales in excess of 836,000 units by 2010.
Prefabricated Housing: A Global Strategic Business Report has been published by Global Industry Analysts (GIA) and examines the worldwide markets for major product sectors, including manufactured, panelised, modular and precut.
The UK housing industry is a predicted growth area for prefabricated construction, due to the launch of systems-built homes and a recent drastic change in the employment of offsite techniques.
Current traditional house-building methods in the UK have come under intense scrutiny as the promotion of prefabricated construction continues to demonstrate its efficiency in reducing construction costs and delays in delivery, as well as combating problems caused by lack of skilled labour, the report claims.
Another reason for the growth in the market in the UK mentioned by the report is the wide variety of designs now available.
The US and Japan are predicted to remain the strongest markets for prefabricated housing until 2010, with the US currently representing over a quarter of all units shipped in 2007.
The GIA report bases its figures on figures on reports from 164 worldwide construction companies.
