Off-site manufacturer Terrapin has become the first company to receive ISO 14001 accreditation as part of Buildoffsite's supplier registration scheme, buildingtalk reports.
Operated by Lloyd's Register, the scheme aims to encourage the implementation of environmental management systems (EMS) to promote eco-friendly improvements in the off-site construction sector.
Managing director of Terrapin Patrick Howlett White told the website: "Gaining ISO 14001 […] has involved educating our staff and developing practices that promote sustainable development across all areas of the business and will ensure that Terrapin is fit for the future."
Terrapin received assistance from the Business Environmental Training Initiative programme to help it achieve ISO 14001, according to the website.
Examples of EMS implemented reportedly include responsibly sourcing raw materials, improving and increasing recycling systems and boosting employee training on environmental issues.
Buildoffsite aims to standardise best practice at offsite construction companies across the UK through a system of promotional certification and listing on the Lloyd's Register website for companies demonstrating excellent working methods.
