Andrew Dix FCIPS

It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Andrew Dix, the Chairman of BuildoffsiteAndrew’s sudden death has come as an incredible shock to us all. Our thoughts go out to his wife Julie and their family.

Andrew had been Chairman for only a short period but had begun to implement some impressive changes to put the organisation in the right shape to support the next stage of the Buildoffsite project. He was a rare talent and will be much missed.

The Buildoffsite Executive Group will implement some immediate measures to maintain the effectiveness of the organisation until a permanent arrangement can be put in place. There will be no loss of momentum in Buildoffsite’s work programme to build a better, more productive, construction industry.

Buildoffsite Rail Hub Visit to Reading Station

On Wednesday 21st February, Buildoffsite’s Rail Hub visited the £120million redevelopment project at Reading Station, part of the Reading Station Area Redevelopment (RSAR) project, as part of their 2017 event programme. Hailed as an exemplary project by the sector, the project client, Network Rail, hosted the morning event together with HOCHTIEF and Costain who were partners in the project JV. The morning offered members a unique opportunity to hear about the conception, planning and logistics of this huge build, which was completed while maintaining full rail and station functionality. The presenters included Tim Monckton, Head of Technical Services at HOCHTIEF, Jerry Hayes, Project Director at Costain, and Jimmy McWhirter, Senior Construction Manager (Station) with Network Rail. The session focused on the construction and placement of the platform canopies and there were plenty of opportunities for questions, giving attendees an opportunity to gain additional insight into the project, the challenges it posed and the solutions found.

From its initial proposal in 2008, the scheme developed and adapted to meet changes and challenges, and was motivated to keep on schedule due to the severe consequences on other successor projects as well as the rail network if deadlines were missed. The scheme was successfully completed in 2014. Keeping the trains running and the commuters commuting made the logistics of the scheme particularly challenging, but the use of offsite build and a tightly planned schedule enabled the station to function with minimal disruption. A specially commissioned factory in Poole provided the offsite manufacture for the scheme, allowing onsite storage to be kept to a minimum.

A high level of collaboration between all parties and a low level of internal resistance to the scheme were highlighted as major contributors to its success. The lessons learned from this project have fed into other Network Rail, Costain and HOCHTIEF projects, with projected time and cost savings expected to be two of the key benefits.

Offsite Construction Show

I have just registered myself as a delegate of the Offsite Construction Show which takes place on 14 and 15 October at ExCel in London’s Docklands. The Show is free to attend and will provide a brilliant opportunity to catch up with the latest offerings from the rapidly developing offsite sector and to meet with people who are working at the cutting edge.

In addition to a 100 stand exhibition, the Show will also host a free to attend Buildoffsite seminar programme which will showcase how offsite solutions can deliver value to key market sectors including rail and water infrastructure, school building, housebuilding plus building services, design quality, refurbishment and new skills.

I don’t think it matters if you have a lifetime of experience working in construction or  you’re a new starter you will take something away from attending; valuable knowledge, new contacts and some insight on the shape of things to come.

Full details and how to register are available on the website: www.off-siteshow.co.uk

I will be on the Buildoffsite stand on both days, hope to see you there!

Richard Ogden to step down

Buildoffsite was established in 2003, with the aim of substantially increasing the awareness across the construction industry of the benefits of offsite construction and significantly increasing the use thereof.  During the past 12 years the organisation has grown organically and generically to its current membership base of in excess of 100 organisations.

Richard Ogden has successfully led Buildoffsite during this period as it has established itself as a successful, credible and industry leading membership based organisation.  Richard himself has become the face of the drive to promote offsite construction.  After some 12 years in the role, Richard has now indicated his desire to step down as Chairman of Buildoffsite in 2016.

Whilst we will all be sorry to lose Richard, this presents an opportunity to appoint a new Chairman to lead Buildoffsite forward into the next phase of development, building on the success to date.

A recruitment process to appoint a new Chairman is being initiated.  This has commenced, well ahead of Richard’s departure date to ensure an orderly transition.  The recruitment is being handled by a subgroup of the Buildoffsite Executive, led by Roger Bayliss.  The subgroup includes Cal Bailey, John Frankiewicz, Bill Healy and Richard Ogden.  The process is being co-ordinated by Richard Livings, a senior resourcing manager.

We are now seeking nominations for the role of Chairman of Buildoffsite.  This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced business leader to really make a difference in the construction industry.  A brief outline of the role and person is set out below.

The Role:

  • Raise and promote the profile of Buildoffsite and develop the business, promote Buildoffsite to new member organisations and engage with them
  • Engage with the construction and other related industries (eg, manufacturing, automobile, aerospace, shipbuilding) and other key business leaders to promote and develop the build offsite movement and the Buildoffsite organisation
  • Maintain regular contact with senior managers from member organisations and monitor the delivery of member value, ensuring that the activities of Buildoffsite are aligned with member needs and expectations
  • Represent Buildoffsite at key meetings with Government and industry leaders and at events
  • Lead Buildoffsite teams as they engage with relevant organisations, promoting and arguing the case for offsite solutions
  • Develop and lead a growing and sustainable organisation, leading the Buildoffsite executive group and the small administrative team

Boundaries

Non-negotiable

  • Responsibility for the developing and implementing an effective strategy to achieve the Buildoffsite aspirations: To lead a transformation of construction method in the UK towards offsite / modular / industrialised / pre-assembled construction. To sustain an excellent, effective and respected organisation
  • Leadership of an organisation with high standards of integrity and governance
  • Reporting to a board broadly similar to the current Executive board.

Negotiable

  • Structure of Buildoffsite organisation
  • Method of engagement with members / government / other industry bodies
  • Development of international opportunities
  • Title; days per week; remuneration

The Person:

  • Extensive knowledge of the UK Construction industry, its key companies and senior managers
  • A solid background either as a client, contractor, subcontractor or supplier working in construction or a related industry
  • Excellent networking skills, industry professional, known, experienced and confident; inspirational at board and senior management level
  • First-hand knowledge of the role of Offsite solutions in enabling more efficient, better value construction projects
  • Challenges the status quo and promotes/leads/change/improvement

For full role description please download here. Members are invited to either register their own interest or to advise of others they think might be suitable candidates.  All enquiries will be treated with the utmost confidence – please contact richard.livings@buildoffsite.com
