An industry-wide campaigning organisation that promotes greater uptake of offsite techniques by UK construction.
Buildoffsite is an alliance of clients, developers, designers, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, government, advisors and researchers.
The challenges facing UK construction are well known. A combination of growing
demand, coupled with poor quality and a reducing skills base, has created
a dilemma that will not be resolved without a "step change" in productivity
and quality of build. The use of offsite techniques offers a potential solution
to this dilemma. buildoffsite has been set up to promote
this option.
offsite has long been seen as a potential solution to the challenges facing UK construction but, to date, the uptake has been limited. Exemplars exist but critical mass for offsite has not been achieved.
What is needed is a step-increase in offsite, leading to tangible increased quality and productivity with a consequent reduction in true unit cost.
For the benefits of offsite to be more widely understood and applied, the challenge is to create the mechanism which will enable the offsite industry to make its case more effectively by increasing awareness, informing, enthusing, and setting standards.
The DTI is supporting this first phase of the project to deliver the critical mass of stakeholders in offsite – clients, designers, manufacturers, contractors, constructors – to identify and implement priority actions. This is the first step in bringing offsite into the mainstream.
buildoffsite’s ambition is to achieve a ten-fold increase
in the uptake of offsite.
buildoffsite champions better construction by acting as a catalyst in the use of offsite across all market sectors.
It is the authoritative voice of the offsite industry.
It will carry out a number of specific activities for offsite:
Organisations already committed to buildoffsite cover the full industry spectrum.
They are successful now and see the benefits that can come from a much wider
application of offsite throughout the UK construction industry.
Buildoffsite is a membership organisation and for the most part it is the annual fees paid by members which provide the revenue to support the Buildoffsite work programme. The fee scale is set out in the attached table.
Unlike many other organisations Buildoffsite does not negotiate discounted fees for certain members. If organisations wish to participate then these are the annual fees that are paid by all.
However, it is not simply a question of Members paying the annual membership fee. What is equally as important is that Members are prepared to invest their time to participate in Buildoffsite activities in order to ensure that their organisation gets the maximum possible value from its membership.
What are the benefits of Buildoffsite Membership?
Buildoffsite has established a range of services and activities that deliver tangible Member benefit. These include:
Discovering Off-site Events: promoted and supported by Buildoffsite but hosted by individual Members who may be manufacturers, designers, constructors or client organisations. These events provide an opportunity for the individual member to promote its products, services and requirements to other members and also to paying guests drawn from the Buildoffsite contact data base. The opportunity to host such events is available only to members of Buildoffsite.
Stakeholder Events: the opportunity for members both to attend and also to nominate guests to attend Buildoffsite Stakeholder Events. Typically held twice a year these popular and well attended business to business and networking events are hosted by the Department for Business and will usually feature presentations from prominent construction clients. Members who wish to do so are also able to use these events to display and circulate their promotional material. Members are also able to participate in both the plenary programme and the associate seminar programmes.
Breakfast Briefings: Members are eligible to attend free of charge all Buildoffsite Breakfast Briefings on a range of topics. Recent events have included expert led workshops on R&D Tax Credits. In addition to the technical discussions these events have also proved to be a great place for business to business networking.
Case Studies: The Buildoffsite web site is currently populated with 200 Case Studies provided by the Membership which feature the use of off site solutions in actual construction projects. This reference collection attracts a high level of traffic and serves to bring the activities of the Membership to a substantial audience in the UK and Internationally. Only Members are able to contribute Case Studies.
Buildoffsite Newsletter: The Buildoffsite Newsletter is published quarterly and is emailed to many thousands of readers across the industry. Members are encouraged to contribute articles and editorials based on their projects, investment decisions and technical initiatives.
The E-Zine: published monthly this highly regarded update on all that is new in off-site construction from across the globe includes an exclusive section highlighting features drawn from the Membership.
Client Briefing Sessions: Opportunities for the Membership to meet privately with leading serial clients and to review their investment proposals for new projects and to offer advice on construction solutions that would offer value to the client.
Speed Dating: A structured opportunity to meet with other Members and to identify opportunities for collaboration and knowledge transfer.
